In 2014, Jeff Bezos believed he could compete with Apple and Samsung by creating his own smartphone.
He was so confident that the Fire Phone would revolutionise the industry that he spent millions of dollars and countless hours building it.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t the case.
It’s safe to say that the Fire Phone was a monumental failure. It was pricey, underpowered, and dependent on Amazon’s ecosystem to be useful. The public simply had little interest. Amazon lost so much money on the Fire Phone that it was forced to take a $170 million write-down.
Some might say that Jeff Bezos was just taking a calculated risk, that he knew the Fire Phone might not be a huge hit but that it was worth a shot.
But let’s be real here, folks. This was a huge mistake. It was the biggest blunder ever made. And it shows that even the smartest, most successful businesspeople can make mistakes..
So what can we learn from Jeff Bezos’ misadventures in the smartphone market?
First off, it’s vital to keep in mind that success in one field does not guarantee success in another. It’s a great lesson to remember the value of calculated risk-taking.
Last but not least, it teaches you to be humble. No matter how successful you are, you’re going to fail sometimes.
It’s how you handle those failures that really defines you.
